What I Use

Last updated: 2025-12-07

Hardware

My main computer is a Framework laptop (13 inches in size, Intel 11th gen processor). I also have a work-issued Macbook Pro, and an aging desktop that now acts more like a file server than an everyday computer.

Software

My laptop runs Debian GNU/Linux. Prior to switching I was an avid Slackware user. FreeBSD drives my home file server, along with my email and web server. I use the bash shell, the emacs text editor, and the Firefox web browser. I use mutt for most of my email reading, but occasionally use Thunderbird if I need to view html emails. My preferred terminal is xterm, and my desktop of choice is Openbox. Though, recently I've been enjoying Gnome.

My Philosophy

I occasionally mix things up with new tools, but for the most part my computer tools have remained mostly unchanged since my undergrad days when I hacked C code on the university's shared Solaris server. I don't disregard new technology per se (look at me, I'm using Gnome!) but I do try and think about new tech through a lens of whether it will actually make my life better. I guess that makes me a sort of tech-Luddite. I don't reject change, I just want change to actually improve something for me.
